Actually, it seems to me that the quality of the performances of classical
music which make it onto CD is in general so high that buying willy-nilly
isn't all that reckless a move. Indeed the sort of random buying Albie
mentions is certainly what most beginners do, and that many of these
beginners go on to become seasoned old classical music hands who debate
the fine points of this or that interpretation in forums such as this one
suggest that it works.
