I think it was Svedja, who wrote in his book (titled something like NPR
Guide to Classical Music) [It's the Record Shelf Guide, named after his
radio program.  -Dave]:

   Leonard Bernstein takes so many liberties with Mahler's 9th that it
   should be retitled Bernstein's 9th.  Well, during Lenny's latter years,
   the difference *had* begun to blur (massively paraphrasing; I don't have
   the book).
