Comparative Archaeology of the British Atlantic World
Session Organisers: Marley Brown, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
Audrey Horning, Queen's University
Belfast
The archaeology of British expansion throughout the Atlantic world is,
by its very nature, a global comparative study. Contributions to this
session consider both the similarities and divergence of the colonial
experience in North America, the Caribbean, and Ireland, particularly
targeting material evidence for the seemingly dichotomous processes of
creolization and cultural continuity. The role of cultural memory in
providing a simplified template for the relations between colonists and
the colonised in light of present-day concerns is considered, as is the
role of the official written record in emphasising the legislated
separation between groups in conflict, and the role of ethno-historical
narratives in overemphasising perceived similarities between all of the
‘strangers’ encountered by English chroniclers, be they Gaelic Irish,
Native American, or African.
Papers chronicling the material links between homeland and colony are
particularly encouraged, as are papers considering new expressions of
material culture resultant of cultural contacts. All papers should be
comparative in nature, and designed to contribute to an ongoing dialogue
about the archaeology of the Atlantic world.

organisers ASAP. E-mail addresses:
