Caltrans did a study called:

Effects Of High Embankment Construction On Archaeological
Materials       1983    Garfinkel, Alan P. And Bobby L. Lister

The study included burying artifacts and soil deposits to study the
effects. If that's not the one you want, perhaps SSCI will lead you to
it from there.
