Saturday Alfred Brendel had to cancel his performance with the Boston
Symphony Orchestra at the last minute and Robert Levin replaced him. He
played the Fourth Beethoven Piano Concerto. Before he started playing he
addressed the audience with a warning that the cadenzas will be improvised.
I have never heard a better performance of this piece. Although at
breakneck speed each note was clearly articulated, all the detail was there
and also the passion.
This was my first experience of hearing him play. The performance knocked
me out! I had no idea that he is such an extraordinary musician.
