It looks like a good ole' spitoon that has lost its base.

They usually have a wider and taller lip bu the rounded bottom is not unusual.

Is that a ring of solder or other stain that would indicate where the base
was attached around the body just under the 'equator"?

Is the hole in the bottom perhaps were a weld or rivet has pulled loose?
