Delighted as I am to hear news of Simon Rattle's visit to San Francisco,
the circumstances are a bit strange. Rattle will conduct a single
performance in small Herbst Theater (900 seats) on June 7... of a concert
by the New Century Chamber Orchestra, marking the group's 10th anniversary.
As usual, the "stand-up" string orchestra will play chamber music -
including the original, small-scale version of Schoenberg's "Verklarte
Nacht." However, not as usual at all - in fact, for the first time ever -
there will be a conductor in front of the group. Rattle. Go figure.
