Don't even think about getting a set by any performer before you know
your own tastes and preferences.  You will find that most available
recordings are on modern instruments, and even among them there are very
great differences.  What you might do for a start is get two different
recordings of the same work, say the D Minor concerto, #20, by Robert
Levin (period--with #17) and by, say, Murray Perahia (modern--with #27).
