As with heating most anything in the microwave there is a risk of burning it.
The trick is not to heat it too much, don't heat it so it's too hot to
touch.  Warm
is plenty.  The best way would simply be to warm the water first, then add
the sugar.

I do find warm water makes things much easier when making 2:1 (though
hot tap water is enough), it's not necessary with 1:1.  Just agitating the
water for a couple of minutes is enough.
