Ah, but 19th century U.S. Armerican pioneers observed Native Americans in the
Delta area of central California digging for tubers and other delicacies.
They called those native "Diggers" and the term spread to many groups. It
eventually became a negative term, to which folks have tried to avoid these
past 30 years.
