Metric measures are good for consistency and complying with Federal
requirements, but there is no reason to not also include inches (or
whatever) as well, when it aids in interpretation. If things were made in
inches (or approximations), it makes sense to record them that way.

The best reason I can offer is that federal agencies to which we contract
have directed measurement in metric. This does not mean anyone doing
private research needs to switch to metric, but that is why I shifted to
metric for linear measure.
