Carol,
Please do not use chemicals on ANY artifacts! Glass should just be cleaned
with a toothbrush and plain water, and the patina left intact. Some day
there may be a way to date this covering.
In my early days of running an archaeology lab, someone decided to use
chemicals on an old penny. Even though I insisted that the stuff be washed
off ASAP, the chemicals remained, and in a few years, the penny was eaten
completely away.
