Better get the clay examined by a ceramics person. They may be so
poorly fired that they disintegrated. If the bricks were fired in a
clamp it is entirely likely that they escaped enough heat to cross
the threshold between unfired and fired. It happens. If they were
mortared, they may have been used on an inside wall where poorly
fired bricks often ended up.
Unfired bricks were used by avocational potters as a convenient clay
source. This practice persisted until recentl.y
