You might want to contact the fine folks at Hartgen Archaeological
Associates in Rensselaer, near Albany, NY. They have done a lot of work in
the city of Albany where much filling has been done over the centuries (as
well as industrial sites, flood plains, canals, etc.). It has been a real
battle for them and I THINK they have used boring or coring to prospect for
sites, strata, and overburdens in trying to get projects approved. Karen
is also likely to be very up on what other archaeologists in the state have
tried.
