Summer Jobs in Historical Archaeology

Positions for Archaeological Field Supervisors & Staff are available with the Washington College 2002 Summer Field School Program at the Harriet Tubman Birth Site (18DO419), in Bucktown, outside Cambridge, Maryland on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The positions will be for 12 weeks, starting May 27th, 2002 through August 9th, 2002 (ending dates may be negotiable).

Review of applications will begin on March 25 and continue until the positions are filled.

Field Supervisors (Archaeologist II):  Field Supervisors will be responsible for the administration and management of field and lab work associated with the Washington College Summer Field School program at the Harriet Tubman Birth Site.  Responsibilities include: assisting faculty and senior staff of the Field School in supervision of Field School students.    Field Supervisors will be expected to work closely with the students in the field; may be asked to offer a lecture to students on an archaeological topic; and will work with the Lab Director in processing and analyzing artifacts and field data, as well as in preparation of the site report. 

Qualifications: graduate work in Anthropology with a concentration in historical archaeology; two years experience in field supervision.  Experience in work on sites connected with the African Diaspora or Black Atlantic is welcome.  

Staff (Archaeologist I):  Staff archaeologists will be responsible for the supervision of field school students under the direction of the Field Supervisors and senior project staff. They also will work with the Lab Director in processing and analyzing artifacts and field data, as well as in preparation of the site report.  

Qualifications: Graduate work in Anthropology or archaeology, completion of an archaeological field school, and at least two years of field experience. 

Successful applicants may work on additional projects during the summer.  Current projects of the program include analysis of the Custom House (1745) excavations, analysis of the 18th C. Hermitage slave quarters, and a marine remote sensing investigation on the Chester River.

Pay Rates:  Compensation is dependent upon qualifications - Archaeologist I rates are $12-13 per hour; Archaeologist II rates are $15 per hour.
