WASHINGTON COLLEGE
Department of Sociology & Anthropology

2002 Summer Field School in Archaeology

3 JUNE - 12 JULY 2002

Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, is offering an archaeological field school for six weeks, from June 3, 2002 through July 12, 2002. The site under investigation is the birthplace of Harriet Tubman located in Bucktown, outside of Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Harriet Tubman's birthplace is located in central Dorchester county in the Bucktown Election District. At the time of Tubman's life, it was owned by the Brodess family, who occupied the land until 1907. The property changed hands a number of times since then and is privately owned today.

Students will learn excavation and lab techniques, remote sensing, and mapping and surveying using both theodolite and GPS. Fieldwork will be augmented by lectures and laboratory work, as well as field trips to nearby sites and museums.

The course will be available for 8 credits through Washington College, Chestertown, Md.

Washington College is a private liberal arts college located in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay region on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, just 90 minutes from Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia. Founded in 1782, WC is the tenth oldest college in the nation and was named after our patron, George Washington who served on its first board of governors.

The College's Archaeological Laboratory is located in the historic Custom House (ca. 1745), on the Chester River. The Custom House was restored in 2001, and the newly opened laboratory is fully equipped for archaeological research. A second lab, focusing on computer mapping and GIS is located on the main campus.

There is no formal application deadline for the field school, however interested students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Enrollments in the course will be limited, and students will be accepted on a first come - first served basis. Some housing on campus will be available for those that apply early.
