A friend, who wanted to get experience as rehearsal pianist with an opera
company, writes:
Just came back from an interview with ____________. Very very
upset. They are willing to pay $200 for 3 weeks of intensive (1
to 10 PM) every day work including weekends. Amazing. Probably
I set my expectations too high. But the problem is not only the
money, it also interferes with my teaching schedule. But still
... it sounds so interesting. I always wanted to do something
like this - get involved in some staging work.
I've never known anyone working harder and getting less recognition (or
money) than these soldiers in the trenches. I have published names of an
entire chorus in reviews, but feel deficient in that I have acknowledged
the work of only rehearsal pianist in print - the remarkable Beebe
Freitas, with the Hawaii Opera Company. It's definitely one of the most
important, least-appreciated "jobs" in opera, oratorio, ballet. This
weekend, take a rehearsal pianist to dinner.
