There is a front page article in today's New York Times that discusses
issues involved in the subjective judging of Olympic Figure Skating. I
don't have much interest in the Olympics and don't intend to watch them.
However, the article put a topic in my mind that I don't recall seeing
batted around here on the list.
I'd be interested in people's thoughts on the impact of judges on music
performance competitions: singing, piano, etc.
The one observation I have seen frequently is that performers are forced
to homoginze their art so as not to alienate any judge. The result of this
supposedly is a dumbed down, lowest common denominator music largely devoid
of artistic expression. Thus we get fabulous technicians who say little.
I will step back and hope that others with experience in these matters
might enjoy chiming in.
