I would know nothing about that. But it brought to mind Allen's comment in
a recent email on this thread:

I was once told that in the manufacture of glass jars there is a mould
release compound used that leaves a residue on the glass, and that really,
new jars should be washed before use. Comments anyone (on the validity of
the statement, not necessarily on the feasibility of doing it)? I did
notice one time when we used a label with a poor quality glue that it would
not stick well to jars of raw honey. After these had been liquefied in a
water bath the labels would stick fine.
