My fuel of choice for years has been grass, dried, of course.  .
. . (the common lawn fencerow type!) Usually available, just grab
a handful. A little green makes dense smoke, if the fire is hot
enough, but not needed. I use the larger capacity sized smoker.
A handful of hay from the barn also works.
