Robin:
A Pompeiian massage cream jar was found at the Peniel Mission site
(1901-present, which was built over a small trash dump dating from
1897-1901) in Skagway, Alaska. According to the report on the excavations,
this was a squat, cylindrical jar made of clear flint glass. It measured
6.8 cm high and 3.1 cm in diameter. The lip was rolled and ground. There
were air vents at its shoulder, and it had a plain, unmarked base.
The manufacturer was Charles M. Martin, of San Francisco. A trade mark
(#26,422) for this product was registered April 16, 1895, and a U. S.
patent was issued January 22, 1895 (U. S. Patent Office 71:449). The
researcher dates this jar from 1895 to about 1920, but doesn't state what
the source of this date is. It is probably the type of rim finish, air
vents, and patent date. The context was the post-1901 deposits. Take the
first date for what it is worth.
