Dear all:
During a recent Phase I survey, while testing in the woods adjacent to a
cemetery, we came across a large (approx 50 m x 5 m) dump consisting of a
variety of containers (cans, bottles, vases, jugs, you name it). I'm sure
it is trash from the cemetery when the maintenance crew cleans the grounds.
There is evidence the practice is still going on, since there was another
dump about 50 m away with plastic flower pots, etc.
My question: Has anyone else come across this type of midden before? Are
there any references available, specifically research and fieldwork
references. Has anyone tested or excavated this type of midden?
The cemetery has existed since at least 1860 and the town is associated with
the lead mining industry in Dubuque. I think there could be some
interesting reaseach done with the midden:
1) Does the dump reflect the entire history of the cemetery, i.e. is this a
recent practice or have they always done this.
2) What indications are there of social/economic status among the residents
of the town.
3) Post-funerary practices in cemeteries.
I'd like to recommend the dump for Phase II testing and would like to have a
few references to back up my research agenda.
Thanks for any help.
