Writing about last night's Domingo gala in Berlin, I misplaced the great
man: born in Spain, working in DC and LA, singing around the world, he is
hardly a "Mexican tenor" - a rather dumb shorthand. Sorry.
As to Barenboim, I did get his place of birth right (Argentina), but he may
just as well be called an Israeli, a Berliner, of Chicago... whatever.
A far more important question about my report is what was the obvious
health problem plaguing Domingo (in all but the voice, amazingly) - I don't
have the answer, but hope it was just a head cold and exhaustion. If so,
surely he will get through the former, and he needs to deal with the
latter.
