I had previously asked for opinions concerning preferences between the
Landowska Goldbergs on EMI recorded in the 1930's and her subsequent
recording from the 1940's available from RCA.
In response, John Dalmas writes:
>Definitely the one recorded in Europe in the 1930's. I can't bear to
>listen to the later one.
I thank John for his opinion. I acquired the EMI version a few days ago,
and for better or worse, have ordered the RCA issue. What is it about the
RCA issue that's disagreeable?
I think what I'll do in the near future is a "round-up" of all my Goldbergs
except for Labadie and Schepkin. I originally reviewed about 12 of them;
since then, I believe I've reviewed at least another 12. Also, I have
around 10 more to review. It's getting very piece-meal at this point,
so I will likely put them all together in one big review project.
I have to omit Labadie and Schepkin. I disliked them sufficiently that
they are no longer in the home; Labadie went to someone at work, Schepkin
to my daughter. Also, I will never want to listen to Labadie again;
Schepkin is a maybe.
As an aside, I apologize for being so tardy with Part II of my St. Matthew
Passion reviews. Although I'm about halfway done with Part II, I did get
on a solo keyboard kick which took me away from the sacred choral arena.
I need the number of hours in a day lengthened by about 50 %.
