They didn't have them. A slightly archaic use of 'absent' to mean
'without' but perfectly good English.

[To be even a little clearer: I think Deryk means that the Budapest
performances did not include the first movement exposition repeats -
the absolute necessity of which is a hotly debated topic. Search
the archives for threads with the word "repeat" in the title. -Dave]
