What about the 1950s-1960s "Tiki Temples" created in gardens surrounding
islander-remake motels, liquor stores, and restaurants? There are several
books on the topic and for a while actual islanders from New Zealand and
Polynesia had quite a racket with architects designing phoney oases for
tourists across America. These are now considered valid folk and
architectural sites.
