Thomas Quasthoff, who has just concluded a series of highly successful
concerts at the Oregon Bach Festival, announced that he will try to return
to Eugene (where he made his US debut eight years ago) in 2004, but will
not participate in the next season. Quasthoff, who has had 16 engagements
with the Berlin Philharmonic in the past two years and will make his opera
debut in Salzburg next year, is cutting back otherwise.
Two of the cancelled engagements are on the Cal Performances schedule. His
appearance with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra on Feb. 14 and with Tabla
Beat Science on March 9 are both cancelled, "due to increased travel and
tour pressures."
The Frieburg orchestra concert will have another soloist, yet to be
announced, but the Tabla Beat Science concert is withdrawn from the
schedule. The group has been created by Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell,
with programs incorporating new work by Talvin Singh, Karsh Kale, and
Sultan Khan.
