I've written/directed/produced a movie that just came out on home video
called "Beethoven's Tenth" -- and I am exhausted.:) Well, it was a LOT of
work. Storyline concerns Beethoven's lost 10th, which carries a curse,
discovered in Minneapolis, MN, by a pair of Holmes/Watson type musical
sleuths
First part of the movie was shot in black and white in keeping with the
costume drama sequences in 1827, the "death year" of the famed composer.
Minneapolis doubles quite nicely for 19th century Vienna exteriors,
although I had to do some careful shooting. The cast and crew are all
from Minneapolis.
There's an original score, co-composed by actor/composer Ken Benner and me,
in the style of Beethoven, which includes an ersatz fragment of the Tenth
Symphony, incidental music, an advertising jingle, a march, and a polks!
Movie stars local actors Ken Benner as Beethoven and a re-incarned music
professor Ries, while his mythical biographer Johann Holz becomes admusic
composer Jack Woods (note the German to English name translation). And
then they uncover the lost 10th.
The movie is a drama with some comedic touches. "Hal Evans," who bears a
striking resemblance to me, plays an eccentric, wealthy collector. There's
an opera student turned villain, played by a real-life opera student/actor
who goes to the UofM. And there's a 19th century monastery librarian who
hides the score.
