For those folks considering applying to the San Diego State University job,
they should be interested to know there is an 18th century Spanish presidio
in the center of the city that served as a field school for San Diego State
between 1965 and 1983, there are dozens of Mexican Period ruins in the rural
areas, and thousands of farmsteads and urban communities that have received
minimal attention.

Historic archaeology in San Diego had a real boost between 1965 and 1975,
when Paul H. Ezell, Ph.D. taught field school at the San Diego Presidio. This
ended when he retired. There have been no good graduate field programs in
historic archaeology since that time. Wonderful collections exist to be
analyzed for a wide variety of studies.

Several major urban archaeology projects were conducted in the City of San
Diego in the past decade, though no reports are available for publication.
These collections remain in the San Diego Archaeological Center to be
analyzed. Huge research opportunities exist for the 1872-1900 period.

I report all this because potential candidates might now know what is here.
Great stuff remains undone.
