Dear Fellow Archaeologists and others with an interest in Historic
Preservation:
I just received the following letters and attachments regarding yet another
attempt in Congress to gut Historic Preservation Legislation. Please read
the documents below, and the attachments as well (they are MS Word files,
and have been virus checked).
They include a description of the proposed bill, a sign-on letter for
interested parties, and a very interesting letter in opposition to the bill
from Theodore Roosevelt IV.
If the attachments do not come through, they can be downloaded from the
Arizona Archaeological Council website, at:

Subject: H.R. 2114 draft sign-on letter
All,
As you are aware, the House Resources Committee has scheduled a
mark-up on H.R. 2114, the "National Monuments Fairness Act," for
Wednesday, March 20.
Attached is a group sign-on letter in opposition to the bill. We need
to know if your organization wants to sign by noon, Eastern Standard
Time tomorrow (March 19), so we can distribute it to all Members of the
House Resources Committee tomorrow afternoon before the mark-up on
Wednesday morning.
Also attached is a copy of Ted Roosevelt's July 17, 2001 statement
in opposition to the bill. In addition we will distribute the TWS
booklet entitled, The Antiquities Act: Protecting America's Natural
Treasures.
We anticipate that the vote on this bill will be largely along party
lines, with most of the Republican Members in support and most of the
Democratic Members in opposition. However, it is probably worth you or
your membership making a special effort to contact the offices of the
following Republican Members: Rep. Jim Saxton (R-NJ) - (202) 225-4765;
Rep. Wayne Gilchrist (R-MD) - (202) 225-5311; and Rep. Mark Souder
(R-IN) - (202) 225-4436, to ask for their votes in opposition to the
measure.
Please respond to Amy Schneckenburger at:

We'll let you know how the mark-up goes.
