I am still amazed that no one on HISTARCH has responded to Ron May's
query about the excavation of motels with a mention of one of the
all-time archaeological classics 'Motel of the Mysteries' [the author
escapes me right now].

Correct! The first motel, still called the Motel Inn, is located on
the
nothern boundary of San Luis Obispo. It is currently closed for
remodeling.
Plans are to preserve the mission revival facade but to demolish the
little
bunglaows in the rear (the most important feature of the earliest
motels).
