"The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver is an excellent look
at a Baptist missionary family in the Belgian Congo in 1959, and I
recommend anything by Natalie Gordimer or JM Coetzee
(particularly "The Life and Times of Michael K") for the effects of
colonialism in South Africa.

As an aside, if you want a hair-raising non-fictional account of the
atrocities precipitated by colonialism in the Belgian Congo, read
"King Leopold's Ghost" by Adam Hochschild.  After getting through
this one, you realize Conrad was only skimming the surface of
what was going on over there...
