I suspect Vaughan Williams had a love-hate relationship with Beethoven.
His essay on the Ninth lists just about everything that could be said
against it and then goes on to explain why none of the faults matter.
To me, it's one of the best essays on music I've read. Although almost all
of his extended statements on Beethoven complain about something or other,
he certainly got a lot of ideas from Beethoven (as well as Bach, whom he
revered).
