COMING UP ON PERFORMANCE TODAY SEPTEMBER 29 - OCTOBER 5, 2001

KORVA COLEMAN IS HOST
Monday, OCTOBER 1

Hour 1 -- Adam Neiman in NPR's Studio 4A: Avery Fisher Career Grant winner
and former PT Young-Artist-in-Residence Adam Neiman joins Fred for a
private piano recital in Studio 4A. Neiman plays music that he considers
under-appreciated: a handful of Russian pieces by Tchaikovsky, Kabalevsky,
Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff. And the Piano Sonata in E minor by Edvard
Grieg.

Hour 2 -- From the Kennedy Center: We'll hear performances from last
week's "Concert for America" at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
in Washington, DC, where dozens of performers donated their talents to help
raise money for the September 11th Fund. And pianist Lang Lang joins the
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Edvard Grieg's Piano
Concerto.

Tuesday, OCTOBER 2

Hour 1 -- Musical offerings: We'll hear a sampling of music performed in
concert.

Hour 2 -- Coming to Terms with Beethoven: Close to 200 years after his
death, why is Beethoven's music still in such demand? PT answer-man Miles
Hoffman joins Fred to discuss why Beethoven stands out in a crowd of many
great composers.

Wednesday, OCTOBER 3

Hour 1 -- A sound ear: Why is it that some orchestra musicians look more
like air traffic controllers? Occupational health and safety specialist,
Alison Wright Reid, says that her research supports the use of earplugs
for orchestra musicians. She tells Fred why.

Hour 2 -- In times of sorrow and reflection, one PT listener turns to Anton
Bruckner's "Te Deum." We'll hear the Southwest German Radio Symphony
Orchestra, led by Sir Roger Norrington, in a deeply spiritual performance
of Bruckner's "Te Deum."

Thursday, OCTOBER 4

Hour 1 -- A sampler of recent concert performances from around the county.

Hour 2 -- Basic Kodaly: PT Basic Record Library Ted Libbey joins Fred
to discuss recordings by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. Ted will add
three exceptional recordings of Kodaly's orchestral works to the library
collection.

Friday, OCTOBER 5

Baer tells Fred what's good about classical music on the web right now.
