        Many of the fire bricks used in the northeastern U.S. were
produced in the Raritan River Valley of New Jersey.  While the mark that
Gordon Pollard mentions is not familiar, some New Jersey maker's whose
marks have been found in the northeast include Sayre and Fisher-they also
made face and common bricks, Mauer, and Phoenix.
