         CONFERENCE
 
On January 19-21, 1995, the ASU-headquartered Coalition to
Increase Minority Degrees (which includes Project PRIME,
Project 1000, the Southern Rocky Mountain Alliance for
Minority Participation, the Hispanic Experts Database/Minority
Experts Database, and the Bilingual Review/Press), in
partnership with the American Council on Education, Arizona
State University, The College Board, The Charles A. Dana
Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation will host
EXPANDING MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES:  FIRST
ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE.  The conference will
be held at Arizona State UniversityŃs Memorial Union.
 
THE CONFERENCE IS THE FIRST OF WHAT WILL BE AN ANNUAL EVENT HELD DURING
THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WEEK HERE AT ASU.
In 1995, pre-conference workshops will take place on
January 19, (Thursday), and the conference itself will take
place on January 20-21 (Friday and Saturday).  The
EXPANDING MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES:  FIRST
ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE will bring together
major presentations on a wide range of topics related to
expanding opportunities for underrepresented minorities
African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans).
 
The general cost for ASU faculty and staff  attending the
conference is $125, a 50% discount off the non-ASU
college/university faculty/staff rate of $250.  This price covers
all meal events, sessions, exhibit areas, and special events.
For éconference-onlyä registrations (no meal events or
special events of any kind), the ASU faculty and staff rate
is $70 (a 50% discount off the non-ASU college/university
faculty/staff rate of $140) and provides access to conference
sessions and exhibit areas.

     YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
EXPANDING MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES:  FIRST
ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE to be held at Arizona
State University in the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona.
The Expanding Minority Opportunities Conference will focus
on coalition building at each step along the educational
pipeline from precollege education to postgraduate
employment issues. Educators, educational administrators,
students, foundation officers, corporate representatives, and
MINORITY INITIATIVES' PROGRAM STAFF FROM AROUND THE NATION WILL
be present to discuss issues of critical importance to minority
student and minority professional opportunities in education
and in employment.  Sponsored by the American Council on
Education (ACE), Arizona State University (ASU), The
Coalition to Increase Minority Degrees (CIMD), The College
Board, and The Charles A. Dana Foundation, the Expanding
Minority Opportunities Conference focuses on African
American, Hispanic, and Native American concerns.  Specific
conference points of interest include elementary, secondary,
and college educational issues; recruitment using high
technology to expand minority opportunities; getting
minority scholarly and creative work published;
future directions of government, corporate and
foundation support for minority initiatives, the effects of
NAFTA on minority opportunities; and minority
involvement in legal, medical, health, and other professions.

CALL FOR PRESENTERS
 
      PRESENTERS FOR THE EXPANDING MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES:
First Annual National Conference are invited to submit
proposals in one of two ways.  (1) As an individual presenter
(20 minutes).  We will combine groups of three presenters with
similar topic ideas, with additional time available for panel
discussion and questions.  Or (2) as a 3 or 4 person panel
 session (90 minute session).
 
      AT THE EXPANDING MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES:
FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE, individuals
representing elementary, secondary, and higher education
levels, educators from all academic disciplines with a special
focus on science, engineering, and mathematics fields,
publishers, editors, corporate representatives, foundation
officers, researchers, and employment program staff are
invited to join us in exploring the education and
employment opportunities for minority students and
professionals.
 
PARTICIPATION INFORMATION
 
     OUR AUDIENCE INCLUDES K-12 TEACHERS, COMMUNITY
college, college, and university faculty and administrators,
 foundation officers, students, corporate representatives, and
minority educational, community, and employment program
staff.  The Expanding Minority Opportunities Conference will
emphasize issues pertinent to all phases of minority
opportunities in education and in employment.  The
conference will also draw in government agencies, human
resource/personnel managers, affirmative action
administrators, and corporate recruiters.
 
    ALL PRESENTERS MUST REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE.  THE
early, reduced registration fee will be extended to persons
whose proposals are not accepted.  Deadline for submissions is
September 30, 1994.  All submissions will be carefully
reviewed, and presenters will be notified of acceptance by
October 31, 1994.

conference site for the EXPANDING MINORITY
OPPORTUNITIES:  FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL
CONFERENCE.  ASU is located in Tempe, Arizona, which
offers quick and convenient access to downtown Phoenix
and to Scottsdale, Arizona.
 
       THE PHOENIX METROPOLITAN AREA, WITH ITS 310 SUNNY DAYS
annually, holds attractions which include the beautiful Heard
Museum featuring Southwest history and contemporary
native American arts and crafts, Museo Chicano, the desert
Botanical gardens, and South Mountain Park--the largest city
park in the world.  Tempe, ASUŃs home, offers Frank Lloyd
WrightŃs final masterpiece, the Gammage Center for the
