"...is birth always refered to as 'traumatic'?"

Well, in some sense I think that birth *is* essentially traumatic in nature,
from the baby's perspective. We do all we can to ameliorate that trauma, to
ease the transition from "in there" to "out here", and it's as "natural" a
life passage as there can possibly be, just as death is, but it's gotta be a
heck of a thing for a baby, no matter how softly it's accomplished!
