2002 Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology

University of Texas at Austin is offering an archaeological field school
from June 5 through July 10, 2002.

Excavations will examine late nineteenth-century urban life in downtown
Dallas, Texas. The major research objective will be to study the historical,
cultural, and social development of African-American communities within
Dallas from 1870 into the early twentieth-century. Our excavations will
focus on abandoned house lots in an area of the city once settled by
ex-slaves, free blacks, and their descendants.

Students will acquire a comprehensive background in field methodology and
historical archaeology. This includes laying out grid systems, excavation
documentation (including photography), mapping and point proveniencing with
a total data station and transit. Fieldwork will be augmented by lectures
(ranging from artifact identification to topics relating to the African
Diaspora), laboratory work, and field trips to nearby historical sites and
museums.
Housing arrangements have been made at a very reasonable rate, and field
crew are expected to reside in Dallas for the field school term.

The deadline for both applications and deposits to ensure a slot in the
field school is April 15th, however, interested students are encouraged to
apply as soon as possible. Enrollment in the course will be limited, and
students will be accepted on a first come - first serve basis. Students
enrolling with a transient status (i.e. non-UT Austin students) must have
all application materials to the UT Admissions Office by May 1, 2002.
