On Norfolk Island there is a pre-fabricated house dating to 1828 (Surgeon's
Quarters) but all the components were manually made at the Lumber Yard in
Sydney. All the framing was provided (Eucalyptus - which is not endemic to
the Island) with pre-cut mortise and tenon joints. The feather edged,
weatherboard cladding (Eucalyptus) was also provided as were window frames,
mouldings - architectural furniture in general. Only the verandah flagging,
bases for the turned posts, footings and fireplaces were constructed of
local stone.
