There was a story circulating that early in Rudolf Serkin's career, after a
long concert at Carnegie Hall, and raptuous applause, he conferred with his
agent "What should I play as an encore?" His agent responded "The Goldberg
Variations". Apparently at the end of the work, three famous pianists were
the only ones left in the hall. I can probably dig up the reference and
supply details if there is interest.
