I have been listening the past few days to d'Indy's String Quartet No. 1
in D major, Opus 35, performed by the Chilingirian Quartet on Hyperion.
The coupling is Chausson's String Quartet in C minor.
This is not a review of the Hyperion disc. I'm just so enthralled by
the second movement of d'Indy's quartet that I felt compelled to share my
affection for the movement. It is hauntingly beautiful throughout its nine
minute length with minimal agitation taking place about 5 minutes into the
movement. The other three movements are memorable as well, and I think
highly of the Chilingirian performance. d'Indy was a pupil of Franck, and
this Quartet has cyclic properties based on a 4 note motif. I would love
some feedback concerning opinions of this second movement and the work in
general.
