I attended a concert by Keith Jarrett back about 1978 or so. He did his
(then) usual improvisations on the piano, and then he had a clavichord
wheeled in. In an almost patronizing manner (although what he said was
right on) he explained that in today's electronically amplified concert
expectations, people had lost the ability to *listen* closely. He
announced that he was about to play a very old instrument and that only
by listening carefully (this was, I believe, in Boston's Orpheum Theater)
could we get anything out of what he was about to play. Somewhat
surprisingly, the concert hall was absolutely still, and he played some
beautiful music -- improvisational, I'm sure, as it had that "Koln
Concerts" sound.
I look forward to hearing Bach on the clavichord.
