The Last Night of the Proms is an orgy of nationalism where people
wave flags, sing Land of Hope and Glory and generally invoke nostalgia
for a specific image of Britain.  Thus the signifigance of the change is
fundamental.  It's akin to the Queen having the Star Spangled Banner played
at a special commemorative Changing of the Guard, which indeed happened
yesterday.  What it indicates is, that at times like these, we should know
where a certain type of nationalism can lead, and that we should rise above
jingoism and insularity.  THINK
