Tom Connor writes of the Kodaly cycle of Haydn string quartets:

>Who else for Haydn chamber music?

Well, no one group can possibly provide listeners with all the benefits
of Haydn's string quartets. Other fine recordings to investigate include
the Mosaiques Quartet on Astree, Salomon on Hyperion, and Festetics on
Arcana; these are period instrument groups. As for modern instrument
groups, there's the Alban Berg (Teldec/EMI), Tokyo on Sony, Tatrai on
Hungaroton, Amadeus on DG, etc. The Lindsays on ASV have received many
raves for their Haydn recordings, although I'm starting to be very
skeptical of their performances.

Haydn's piano trios are also wonderful works. I'm partial to the
Chrstopher Coin series on Harmonia Mundi, but there are many other
recordings to check out.

Mitch Friedfeld writes:

>Be sure to check out the piano sonata series played by Jando, also on
>Naxos.

That's good advice from Mitch. If anything, I prefer Haydn's best piano
sonatas over his best string quartets. In addition to Jando, recordings
of the piano sonatas from Brendel on Philips (4 cd's) and Schiff on Teldec
(2cd set) are outstanding. Ax recorded two cd's for Sony, and they are
worth investigating.

For the Haydn symphonies, I always recommend Colin Davis on Philips.
