Kirk was asking about Bach piano recordings in the Hanssler series. I
have the Koroliov Goldbergs and another disc of him performing a few Bach
keyboard works. Both recordings are very good, although not at the top
level. His Goldberg Variations is highly expressive and on the slow side;
it's an excellent version but does not reach the level of Gould 1982 or
either Tureck version (Philips/DG).
Edward Aldwell recorded the French Suites for Hannsler. It's a good set
but not as fine as the harpsichord sets from Moroney, Jarrett, and Hogwood.
I am currently reviewing Robert Levin's WTC Book II set, also from
Hanssler. It's an interesting program as Levin uses a fortepiano, organ,
clavichord, single-manual harpsichord, and double-manual harpsichord. Not
only is the instrument used not predictable, but Levin's interpretations
are never predictable either.
