I recently bought the Tintner/RSNO Naxos Bruckner #1 and was disappointed
by the sound. The strings seemed completely overwhelmed by the brass,
which at times sounded like a tank division on the move. I do not know
whether it was the fault of the engineers, acoustic or conductor but the
sound was not integrated.

Perhaps the fault lies elsewhere. To what extent do the brass sections of
modern orchestras reflect what Bruckner would have expected in his day? Is
there a recording of Bruckner on period instruments that reveals a wholly
different internal balance between strings, wind and brass?

Having said that, try the Celibidache Munich PO (EMI)Bruckner 4th. It
would be hard to find a better balanced Bruckner performance.
