Ordinarily, I don't associate von Karajan with Schubert, but von Karajan
and the Berlin Philharmonic did a complete cycle for EMI (and may have done
one with DG as well, but I don't have the Schwann). I looked for reviews
in back issues of ARG, but they only go to 1994. So my question is this:
Is *this Schubert any good?
So far, my search for a likeable Schubert has lead me in all sorts of
directions from the Hanover Band, to Colin Davis' recent release on RCA,
to the Naxos, Harnoncourt, Solti, . . .
The only Schubert that electrifies me is Beecham's mono recording of 3,
5, and 6 on EMI, the Mackerras recording of the 9th (on MHS now), and the
Sinopoli 8th (DG). That covers most of the symphonies, except for 1, 2, 4,
and 7 (I'm using the old numbering system). That's quite a chunk of
unfulfilled desire!
