Whether or not in fact we can find evidence of some theoretical knowledge
in pop composers and songwriters, that doesn't necessarily mean that they
have formally studied music theory.  I contend that certain aspects of
music theory are so pervasive in both popular and classical music that
anyone picking out songs on a piano or a guitar by ear would be exposed
to those theoretical underpinnings.
