I kinda doubt it... I think if orchestras tried going seriously avante
garde, their situation would only get worse.
CM concerts, particularly orchestral concerts, are really expensive
compared to pop concerts. Avante garde afficionados are mainly the
young-music/art-student crowd with no money, while the majority of people
who can actually afford to go tend to be older and more set-in-their-ways.
If you alienate the latter group, the former group can scarcely afford to
come in and take their place.
