Nice to see discussion of Honegger. Though not commonly performed, his
music has not completely disappeared from live U.S. performance. In
March of this year the Minnesota Orchestra presented a concert version of
Jeanne d'Arc au bucher (Helmuth Rilling conducting) and followed that this
summer with a performance of Pacific 231 (Marin Alsop conducting.) This is
atypical frequency for Honegger in the Twin Cities, but may bode well for
the future.
I have always been puzzled that his Pastorale d'ete is not programmed more
often as it is a short work that would complement many orchestral programs.
Soft ending and lack of familiarity, I suspect.
Anyway, there is a good single-CD sampling of his symphonic works (all
three movements symphoniques, Symphony #2, Pastorale d'ete and Monopartita)
on a 1999 Decca recording with David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle
Orchestra.
